"I think it was worse for Karen. Mom and I never got along very well. I was too much like Dad." Beth shifted in her chair. "I missed her and everything, but Karen took it personally. She always felt like it was her fault that Mom left. She still does."
"What about your dad?"
"I think he was more relieved than hurt. They'd both known for years that they'd made a mistake, and they wasted fourteen years of their lives paying for it."
"You don't sound bitter, most people would be."
"Believe me, at first I resented Mom leaving, but after a while I realized their constant fighting and the anger between them had gotten so bad it was like we'd been granted a reprieve after she left."
"How do you and Karen get along?" Jo asked. "Being an only child, I'm always curious about how siblings interact."
"We were probably about the same as any other sisters. When we were younger we fought a lot. There's two years difference in our ages. She was interested in makeup and boys, and I liked working the ranch with Dad. As we got older we had more in common. Now her life pretty much revolves

"What about Janet?" Jo asked, unable to be silent about Janet any longer.
"Oh," Beth chuckled. "That's a loose end that's not going to be fun tying up." Beth told Jo how she had met Janet.
"Are you in love with her?" Jo asked.
"No. I'm in love with you," Beth answered honestly. "I was in lust with Janet. I had been alone for six years, and she came along at the right time. We've never talked about a lasting relationship. Besides, there are some major points of friction between Tracy and Janet."
Jo felt a spark of joy at this news. She didn't want Beth to be involved with anyone else. Jo didn't want Beth to have a chance to swing the conversation back on her, so she asked another question.
"When did you know you were gay?"
Beth shook her finger at Jo. "You're very good at controlling a conversation. But to answer your question, in college. I played on the tennis team and had a lot of trouble with my shoulders. My roommate gave great back rubs. One night the massage got really good and . . . well, let's just say I've been a changed woman ever since." Beth began to rebraid her hair.
Jo felt herself growing excited just watching her.
Beth looked up and found Jo's gaze on her, and Jo knew she had been caught.
"What about you?" Beth asked to break the tension.
"The second grade."
"Get outta here."
Jo shook her head. "No. I was in the second grade. Her name was Katie Bass, and she was four months older than me. Her father was a doctor, and she knew all about where babies came from." Jo picked up a twig and began to break it into small pieces. "One day after school we
